Hanyang University’s Department of Korean Studies was established in March, 2001 as part of the GSIS. Korean Studies is a multidisciplinary programme that allows foreigners to obtain a deep understanding of the country’s past, present and future. Economic and political, as well as social, historical and cultural aspects of Korea are emphasized. Furthermore, Korea’s relations with its East-Asian neighbours as well as the rest of the world are covered extensively through the programme. The Korean Studies programme offers Master’s and Doctoral courses. Students presently enrolled in the programme come from various countries in North and South America, Europe, Africa as well as in Asia.
The Korean experience provides an excellent opportunity for prospective students to advance their understanding of broader issues such as the economic and political development of developing countries, the role of middle powers in the international arena, and regional cooperation in East Asia. In this light, students on the Korean Studies programme will acquire special insights into its development strategies and international relations as well as a deeper understanding of Korea itself.
