With the rise of globalization, the lines between domestic and international issues have become increasingly blurred. While interdependency among nations and between regions seems undeniable, there are also new fissures and deepening divisions. Thus, it is more important than ever to train professionals who can navigate today’s uncertain world with insight and sensitivity.

Since the spring of 1997, the Graduate School of International Studies (GSIS) at Hanyang University has spearheaded the effort to produce the finest global leaders for the 21st century, providing the intellectual breadth and professional development necessary to successfully launch young students into the international arena.

The GSIS trains area studies experts on China, Japan, Russia, and the USA, the leading powers in the international community that greatly influence on the security and politics of the Korean peninsula as well as the rest of the world. It also offers a variety of subjects in Korean Studies to promote awareness of Korea’s growing role in the international community.

GSIS’s curriculum is specifically designed to emphasize Chinese, Russian, American, Japanese and Korean studies. The focus of teaching, research and related activities is on the politics, economy, society, culture and history of the relevant country of studies, while instruction is conducted in respective native languages and English. Its objective is to provide an environment in which both theoretical and pragmatic thoughts can flourish. With due emphasis on critical thinking and creative insight, it encourages its students to develop progressive ideas and perspectives.

In today’s global community, there is an increasing demand for individuals who can meet the challenges of global competition and cooperation. The GSIS is geared to meet these challenges of globalization in the 21st century by training experts in the fields of international relations and area studies. Today many of our graduates have gone on to distinguish themselves in various roles in the public and private sectors, ranging from management and finance positions with global companies to policy analysis roles for research institutions and international organizations to distinguished international relations work for government agencies.

All in all, Hanyang GSIS is the hub for training 21st century global leaders and is the strategic choice for students seeking the greatest competitive edge any programme can offer: exceptional leadership opportunities in the most dynamic atmosphere. As 2007 marked our tenth year at GSIS, we see the next years as an opportunity for a second “take-off.” We will continue our efforts to establish the GSIS as the most prestigious international studies institute in the world well beyond Asia. To students interested in gaining the perspective and the knowledge essential to become influential actors in the international arena, we extend a wholehearted welcome!
