Introduction
For those of you who are imbued with international genes but who also want to experience Asia, the Graduate School of International Studies (GSIS) of Hanyang University offers the best of both worlds: immersing yourself in an outstanding interdisciplinary programme with hands-on exposure to Asia’s unfolding opportunities and challenges. Within a 100-minute flight from Seoul lies Beijing, Tokyo and Shanghai-four of the most dynamic, historically significant, and culturally diverse cities in Asia.

Hanyang University ranks one of the top few research universities in Asia. Lying on the eastern end of central Seoul, the University faces Han River to the south. It has a second campus along the coastline at Ansan, about 20 miles southwest of Seoul.

The GSIS was established in 1997 with a special grant from the government with the goal of educating and training regional experts and professionals needed in the new era of globalization. The GSIS has been expanding and now covers interdisciplinary area studies and related research, consisting of five departments specializing in Chinese, Russian, American, Japanese, and Korean Studies.

Hanyang GSIS offers a truly interdisciplinary programme which has been acclaimed as the best at least in Asia. The main strength of the GSIS lies in its interdisciplinary research. This is in large part due to our founding philosophy of creating a curriculum which combines theory and practice. Taking the interdisciplinary perspective as a fundamental feature of international studies, the GSIS supports research projects spanning multiple fields of international relations. Factors affecting international relations are so diverse and multi-dimensional that no one academic discipline is likely to provide satisfactory explanations and solutions. The GSIS is proud to offer a rigorous training programme that prioritizes the development of analytical skills and offers a firm foundation in the concentration fields of diplomacy and security, development cooperation, international trade and international business.

Still young, Hanyang GSIS has a winning programme and a proven track record of producing global leaders. It also boasts an excellent job placement record for graduates. The GSIS offers MA and PhD programmes focusing on five countries: China, Russia, the USA, Japan, and Korea. Students benefit from a variety of courses emphasizing multidisciplinary understanding of language, culture, society, history, economy and politics of their relevant country of studies. Curriculum taught at the GSIS has proven to be the most effective. Teaching orientation is to offer students essential courses to acquire and enhance necessary skill set for the analysis of international issues.
