Since the 1990s, interests in Korea and Korean studies have prominently emerged in Asia and CIS regions including North America, Europe and Russia as the Republic of Korea has undergone remarkable economic development, successful democratization and growing popularity of Korean culture worldwide.
Against this backdrop of rising status, the number of foreign students with interest in Korea Studies, willing to study in Korea is rapidly increasing.
Korean Studies mainly focuses on studying the general features of Korea. However the intricacy still remains to distinctly define the clear realm of Korean Studies as an independent academic field.
Korean Studies, different from other departments such as history or physics which concentrates on a specific subject for research, encompasses all elements related to Korea including language, history, culture, politics, economy, sociology, geography, science and etc.
It is recognized as a branch of Regional Studies as geographic and political factor fundamentally outlines the frontiers of Korean Studies, which involves comprehensive understanding of Korea in academic perspective. Meanwhile Korean Studies is gaining more emphasis in national diplomacy and politics due to the increasing necessity to enhance the national competitiveness and brand image of Korea.
It is also strategically accounted as a mean to strengthen the soft power in the international society. The focus of research and discussion of Korean Studies in domestic academia, however, tends to put more importance on Korean traditional culture and philosophy instead of modern Korean society.
Compared to this, Korean Studies in foreign countries highlights the success story of Korean economic and political development or contemporary social and cultural aspects.
CKSI has its mission to establish an integrated academic model for “Contemporary Korea Studies” as well as to conduct various joint research in collaboration of scholars and researchers from essential academic fields of Korean Studies including Korean politics, economics, sociology, culture, language and other core departments.
