Introducing Hanyang University Graduate School of International Studies’ KIEP-GPAS(Graduate Program for Area Studies)

KEIP-Hanyang University Graduate School of International Studies’ joint area studies expert cultivation program collaborates with the Korea Institute of International Economic Policy (KIEP) to provide students with joint courses, special lectures, area studies, scholarship programs, and internships.
The various programs support students who wish to study topics on Central Asia, Mongolia, and Russia, among other areas and countries.

Hanyang University’s Graduate School of International Studies combines KIEP’s capacities for economic and commerce studies and GSIS’s educational specialties.
Hence the KIEP-GPAS (GPAS: Graduate Program for Area Studies)joint program was established in 2008 to cultivate experts who can raise the value of a Global Korea and contribute to the national economy.

Field Station Utilization By allowing students to participate in Foreign Field Studies with HK Research Professors,
this program provides students the opportunity to gain living and useful information
on the Eurasian area.
Provision of Eurasia Hubdata and cyber courses Students can access the Asia Pacific Research Center’s Eurasia Hub
(Eurasia comprehensive information portal) for material as well as cyber courses
offered by the Eurasian Education Center.
Usage of data Students can access the Asia Pacific Research Center’s various research materials
and data and participate in diverse academic conferences and forums.

Hanyang University GPAS-Central Asia • Mongolia

The goal of this program is to invigorate research and education about Central Asia and Mongol areas, where the importance of the academic and policy has been left relatively isolated, as well as cultivating renowned international experts on Central Asia who have exceptional language capacities and national knowledge.
중앙아시아 지역연구 및 교육기관으로서의 인프라 확충 GPAS에서운영하는 정규강좌, 해외학자 초청강연 및 어학강좌 이외에도 인문한국사업을 수행하고 있는 아태지역연구센터의 각종 유라시아 지역연구 관련 사업과의 유기적인 연계를 통해 GPAS 참가 학생들이 중앙아시아 지역에 대해 보다 많은 정보를 접하고 간접 체험도 할 수 있는 다양한 기회 제공. Also, the foreign internships and overseas field research programs allow students to familiarize themselves with the area and gain field experience. Completing this program also provides students on-the-job experience after they successfully enter society in the relevant fields.

Hanyang UniversityGPAS-Russia

The goal of this program is to add on to the regular curriculum of the GSIS’s Russian Studies major a more professionalized and specialized courses which support student research.
This in turn is expected to cultivate internationally renowned experts on Russia who have exceptional language capacities and national knowledge. The GPAS-Russia (Special Package)provides specialized courses on Russia, Student workshops, support for Foreign Field Research, and Special Lectures from professionals of various fields.

Operations
  • - Utilizes 2 months of foreign studies rather than 6 to provide more students with the opportunity
  • - Provides as many opportunities as possible for students to strengthen basic knowledge on the relevant
    foreign language and also provides means to improve language abilities abroad
  • - Allows students in the program to contribute to the relevant area research after completing
    the internship through giving missions such as material research and local interviews, etc.
  • - Applies students’ reports on internships and local institutions’ student evaluations
    for future internship programs
Expected Effects
  • - Cultivating a global mindset along with on-the-field experience and familiarity to the area through assisting tasks at the local institutions
  • - Developing area research capacities through local data acquisition and interviews as well as language abilities through communicating with locals.
  • - Contributing to networking in relevant institutions such as local universities, research institutions, companies, public offices, etc.
Foreign Field Research
  • - To increase the quality of Graduate Students’ papers, the GSIS selects one student with the best research paper in “Eurasia Area Studies” to dispatch overseas for overseas area research.
  • To increase the effectiveness of overseas are research, students utilize existing local networks for cooperation on local interviews and data acquisition.

Eurasia Area Studies Group

Eurasia Area Studies Group
Features A study group constituting of GPAS students that researches and analyzes trends in Eurasian countries and areas such as Russia, Mongolia, Central Asia, etc.
Goals This study group contributes to students gaining academic qualities, research capacities, and confidence as area studies specialists by encouraging students to choose their own topics, present on them, and develop them into research papers for a self-published academic journal.

Operations
  • - Participants select their own topics and present and debate on them each week.
  • - Asia Pacific Research Center’s Research Professors who are active as experts in various fields
    such as Eurasian politics,economics, international relations, society, culture, literature, religion, history, folklore, and language conduct seminars and provide guidance on statements.
  • - Contents and accumulated materials presented in the weekly workshops are published on the online journal about Eurasian Area studies, e-Eurasia.
  • - Every year, 「Central Asia 원우논집」 is published after each topic is developed into a research paper under the guidance of a professor and a contest is held.

  • - Understanding the importance of the Central Asian region and gaining information not just on the academic trends of the field but also about the field as experts
  • - Providing a platform for local and international experts to network and exchange information by participating in special lectures and academic conferences
  • - Establishing the basis for GPAS students to look for ways to successfully venture out to society after graduation through established Central Asia specialist networks
